Vivant Art Gallery proudly welcomes Claes Gabriel, a visionary artist whose work is a celebration of Black identity, heritage, and resilience. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and now rooted in Philadelphia, Gabriel’s creations aren’t just art—they’re a call to reflect, connect, and transform. With each piece, Gabriel invites you to experience the beauty of cultural storytelling reimagined for today’s world. Meet the Artist: Claes Gabriel

Claes Gabriel’s story begins in Haiti, where the vibrant culture of his homeland and the influence of his father, renowned painter Jacques Gabriel, sparked his artistic journey. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1989, Gabriel earned a BFA in Painting and Sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he refined his ability to transform stories into striking works of art.
But Gabriel doesn’t stop at painting—he reinvents it. His signature style involves sculpting canvases into masks and free-standing statues, bringing a deified energy to each piece. Inspired by legends like Frank Stella and Sam Gilliam, his work lives in three dimensions, blending modernist abstraction with the spiritual depth of African and Haitian traditions.
Gabriel’s art has graced galleries from Paris, France to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and now finds a home at Vivant. We are offering you a unique opportunity to own a piece of cultural brilliance.
